Goals from Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero either side of half time sealed Manchester City’s spot to face Wigan in the FA Cup final. In all probability the tournament represents Roberto Mancini’s teams last chance of silverware this season and the Italian believes a victory in the competition would complete a “successful” season for the blues.
The Italian claimed “If we win the FA Cup and get second position it would be a good season”. Perhaps that smacks of a man trying to convince himself or maybe his employers as few will see an FA Cup will making up falling so far behind in defence of their Premier League title, crashing out of the Champions League group stage and failing in the League Cup. It is without doubt a step backwards for City this year and that is why there is pressure on his position at the club.
Manchester City will undoubtedly go into the cup final as firm favourites to beat Wigan and claim their second FA Cup in three years. Many saw this semi final against Chelsea as the real final, with the winners surely progressing to win the tournament.
Chelsea were slow out the blocks in truth and struggled to make any impression in the first hour allowing City to build a two goal cushion. Demba Ba produced a piece of inspiration after 66 minutes for his side, who in general were extremely wasteful in the final third and thus wasting the chance to pressurise Manchester City.
The only real cause for concern in the second half for Roberto Mancini will be if the FA investigate Sergio Aguero’s two footed stamp of David Luiz. The Argentinian appeared to jump on Luiz while he was on the floor and if the referee didn’t see the incident, Aguero will surely be looking at a three-match ban for a disgraceful piece of conduct.
